“Lets Play Teacher”/ “Ogretmencilik Oynayalim”

A quick recap of my first four days:  After landing in Istanbul in the afternoon and attending my mom’s high school reunion that night, I got to see some of my family members the following day.  For the weekend, we took off for my dad’s middle/high school reunion in a small town an hour outside of Ankara: Kizilcahamam.  Kizilcahamam is renowned for its healing hot springs and mineral water, yet I felt healthy enough to not feel the need to enter any of the springs.  After a night in Kizilcahamam that was highlighted by a surprise artificial wedding that my dad’s friends setup for my parents to commemorate their 25th anniversary, we took off for Safranbolu, famous for being a historic hub for the most expensive spice in the world: Saffron.  This UNESCO World Heritage site is lined with restored historical buildings that gives the entire city an early 20th century village feel.  We stayed the night in a historical mansion which had an indoor pool that served as the water depot for the mansion.  There are 1011 historical buildings/homes recognized by UNESCO in this 20,000 population town.

The highlight of the night for me was the restaurant we went to that evening.  While the food was incredible, and the decoration with a 1960’s furnace in the middle of the restaurant that could only hold four tables made you feel at home, it was three of the local girls sitting next to our table that provided the highlight.  Avoiding the cold and sitting next to the furnace with only a single pen and notepad, one girl, no more than 5 years old, turned to another girl who was no more than 7 years old, and asked if they could play teacher.  The 7 year old, proud to have more knowledge than the 5 year old, agreed and worked on the alphabet with the younger girl until we left the restaurant.  The satisfaction on the younger girl’s face for developing her alphabetical skills and as a result spelling her name for the first time in her life, and the satisfaction of the older girl for teaching her how to spell her name, made any videogame I ever played to that date insignificant.  Never did I finish a video game looking nearly as fulfilled as these two girls did, and I left the restaurant understanding further how a person that possesses less in life can make more out of what little he/she has.

Ilk dort gunumu kisacasi ozetleyim:  Istanbul’a vardigimiz gunun aksaminda, annemin Kadikoy Maarifden arkadaslarinla birlikte bir raki muhabbeti gerceklestirdik.

I only put a couple of pictures below to not overcrowd this blog entry any further. The first two pictures are of our hotel room.  The third is a panormic view of Safranbolu.  The fourth is our breakfast in the hotel, and the sixth picture is of one of the many redecorated streets of Safranbolu.
